Cayo robber injured during shootout w/cops
Not all the weekend crime remains unsolved, in fact, San Ignacio police can boast that they foiled a robbery by catching the bad guys and recovering the loot. On Sunday, police, acting on a tip of a robbery going down at a local restaurant, rushed to An Sam on Third Street just as three young men were running out of the building. The officers told the men to stop, but the youths responded with gunfire. A shootout ensued and when the dust cleared, one of the suspects had been shot in the leg. The injured man was detained and identified as twenty-five year old Valentine Casey of Camalote Village. As for the other two suspects, while one young man is still on the loose, eighteen-year-old Joel Fuentes of Belmopan is now in police custody. Investigations into the incident have since revealed that the three men held up the restaurant owner and his family at knife and gun point and had grabbed approximately fifteen hundred dollars from the till. All the money was found and handed over to the grateful businessman. Police say they expect to file charges of robbery and aggravated assault against Casey and Fuentes tomorrow. If Casey’s name rings a bell, don’t be surprised. He was charged last year as the mastermind behind the burglary of the police exhibit room in Belmopan and is in fact out on bail for several OTHER charges.
