Belize P.M. and Guat Pres. meet on Saturday
We don’t know if it’s a good sign or bad, but the facilitators in the OAS sponsored mediation have asked to meet with the leaders of Belize and Guatemala. Both President Alfonso Portillo and Prime Minister Said Musa have agreed to the request and the tête-à-tête will take place in Guatemala on Saturday, April thirteenth, immediately following the summit of the RIO Group in San Jose, Costa Rica. According to a government press release, facilitators Paul Reichler and Sir Shridath Ramphal, would like to hear their views before presenting the plan for settling the Guatemalan Claim to Belize. That presentation has been scheduled for April twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth in Washington, D.C. Accompanying the P.M. at Saturday’s meeting will be foreign Minister Assad Shoman and Ambassador Fred Martinez, who represents the United Democratic Party on the negotiating team.
