CET to teach jewelry making

Story Picture
A more familiar name in vocational education is the Centre for Employment Training. Today, we found that CET will soon be expanding its curriculum.

Jacqueline Woods, Reporting

The course is not scheduled to start until four months from no. But when the programme gets underway at the Centre for Employment Training, it will be the first time that students in Belize will have the opportunity to receive formal training in the designing

and manufacture of jewelry.

Cecil Ford, Manager, CET

“The jewelry design and manufacturing programme has a lot of potential in the various amount of things that can be made, from which we could realise some money from that could assist in developing the school.”

The programme is the result of a working relationship between CET, The Anglican Diocese and jewelry designer and manufacturer, Vernon Wilson.

Bishop Romero Palma, Anglican Diocese

“Through the connection with the Episcopal Church in the United States, I received a call offering a volunteer to do a jewelry course in Belize. The church got involved in this particular programme because we had somebody who is a jeweller. And the other part of it is that the church got involved because of the situation in Belize itself, where we could offer another trade to young men and women in the country in jewelry, and to create something new for the tourist to be here. So we thought this was a golden opportunity.”

Vernon, who specialises in gold and platinum, has been doing custom order jewelry work for thirty years. Now retired, Vernon has decided to impart his experience to young men and women…and in so doing also giving them a chance to make money.

Vernon Wilson, Jewelry Designer/Manufacturer

“I needed to give back some of what I’ve received in my lifetime. I started in the jewelry business over thirty years ago because I was unemployed and had no income and needed to make a living.”

Ford says the course will not only be made available to CET students, but anyone interested in learning the trade can enrol in the programme. Jacqueline Woods reporting for News 5.

The jewelry course will start in August. If you would like more information on the programme, contact Cecil Ford at CET.
