New buildings for Stella Maris

Story Picture
It is one of Belize’s best known educational institutions but has not always had the benefit of the resources to live up to its reputation. Today, for the Stella Maris School, that situation changed.

Jorge Espat, Area Rep., Freetown Division

“These young people with special needs, come together everyday to forward a common agenda. They dare us all, they dare the handicap not to retreat into despair, they dare the healthy not to be complacent, they dare us to heal the divisions, to stop the violence and to end inequality. These young citizens see Belize not in red and blue, but right and wrong and they teach us life-long lessons.”

Lessons that benefited nine students back in 1958 when Stella Maris School started in a small room on the grounds of the Infirmary. Today a dream has been realised for the school as they inaugurated this new two-storey concrete building, which consists of four classrooms, a principal’s office, kitchen and reception area; all built at a cost of half a million dollars, a grant from the United Kingdom Government.

Principal Joy Westby said today is a proud moment for everyone involved.

“The inauguration of this new two-storey building, with spacious facilities, provides new opportunities for us to do even more. Special education places emphasis on individualised instruction. Much depends on the ability and aptitude of teachers to adapt and innovate within the space provided. We have yearned for this day. Let me assure this gathering that behind these spanking walls there is a new atmosphere for learning. We are going to use these classrooms with love and compassion and bring out the best in our students.”

Prime Minister Said Musa in his address reiterated that the institution has produced some outstanding students.

Prime Minister Said Musa

“We heard today the beautiful voice of Teresita Moh. Whenever I go to Benque Viejo del Carmen and we have a ceremony, that’s the voice I love to hear, Teresita’s voice. And of course we know many of you will know about the musical talent of Charlie Chiac from Toledo, and who can forget the powerful radio voice and quick wit of Donovan Reneau, all graduates of Stella Maris.”

One soon to be graduate, Sheena Pitterson, demonstrated that musical talents come in all forms. (Sheena signs to song, “You Light up my Life”)
