Opposition Leader Says Belize Can Benefit if Medic al Marijuana is Legalized

John Briceño

The use of marijuana for medicinal purposes is garnering increased acceptance and according to Briceño, investors are looking to Caribbean countries where they can build resorts that cater to medical marijuana users, attract high-end tourists as well as open new avenues to medical tourism.

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“We have already taken the first step to decriminalize marijuana. It is time for us to study what should be next. It is becoming a major industry worldwide. Presently it is about a hundred and forty four billion dollars and it is growing exponentially. We have certain advantages. We have the land, we have the sunshine we have the water to be able to produce very good products and this could be one of them. We have medical marijuana, tourism marijuana, wellness center that will include marijuana. There is so much that can be done but we have a government that is completely lack of ideas. They have no idea of what they are going to do or what they are doing in this country. We can see the spiral that Belize has been taking over the last ten years under the United Democratic Party. Look at Jamaica, Jamaica that is smaller than us, that has less agriculture land available. Their aim is to be one of the leaders in medical marijuana. Why can’t we be that? Why can’t we do that? But it shows you the difference between a government that is totally bankrupt of ideas and another government that is looking at different things and new ideas.”
