Court orders extradition of Belizean

Chief Magistrate Herbert Lord on Monday ruled that Belizean businessman Kevin Morris should be extradited to the United States to answer charges of conspiracy to traffic cocaine. Morris, who only recently was granted bail, had been imprisoned for fourteen months while the extradition proceedings played out in court. Today, News 5 spoke with Morris who said he’s retained the services of senior counsel Dean Barrow to start his appeal process.

“You have fifteen days which you could send an appeal. You have to do it within the fifteen days, and that’s the process that we going through. We getting ready to send an appeal to appeal it, so it goes to Supreme Court.”

“What are the allegations for your being extradited?”

“The allegation is conspiracy to traffic, and this charge is coming out of Minnesota. It’s a conspiracy charged based on some people who said that I’ve been involved with certain things. As the news put it yesterday, I was busted with five kilos of cocaine and all that in Minnesota. That’s not true; there’s nothing like that. It’s a conspiracy charge and some people are saying that I am involved. That’s basically what the charge is all about.”

Belize police picked up Morris on February first, 2001 at the request of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency. The D.E.A. claims that Morris, a former baggage handler for Continental Airlines at Houston Airport, used his position to smuggle cocaine into the U.S.
