American Missionaries Mistaken for Child Abductors in Patchakan

A pair of missionaries, both of whom are American nationals, raised the suspicion of villagers when they were observed taking pictures near the primary school in Patchakan earlier this week.  Their apprehension comes on the heels of an incident in Trial Farm Village earlier this month in which an abduction attempt was thwarted.  In this instance, residents of Patchakan took no chances and immediately alerted the police department.  When officers responded to the location, the men were questioned and it was later confirmed that they are missionaries working in that area of the Corozal District.  Assistant Commissioner of Police Joseph Myvett provided additional details.

“On Tuesday, based on concerned calls received by police, they visited Patchakan Village whereupon arrival two male individuals were found and interviewed, who indicated that they are a part of a humanitarian mission.  They were taking photographs of the school; however, at that point in time the school was on recess hence the concern for the villagers.  However, their identity and mission was confirmed.”

“They are U.S. citizens.”

“They were not in custody; they were just interviewed to determine the reason for their presence there.”
