Repeat Offender Carlos Lopez is Busted in Corozal with Two Pounds of Weed

Thirty-four-year-old Carlos Lopez is back in the news tonight for another drug offense. In late August, he was acquitted of drug trafficking and firearm offenses when a case brought against him fell apart in the lower court.  Lopez, along with thirty-seven-year-old Peter Schmidt, was busted in December 2017 in possession of five kilos of cocaine.  The duo walked free of the charges two months ago. The most recent incident occurred up north. Around five-thirty on Thursday evening, the Belize City resident was handed over to Corozal police by customs officials at the northern border checkpoint.  An investigation revealed that Lopez and twenty-seven-year-old Kenrick Gentle were found in illegal ownership of a brown and maroon pillow case containing one thousand, one hundred and twenty-six grams or roughly two and a half pounds of marijuana.  Lopez and Gentle have since been arrested and charges for drug trafficking.  On August twenty-seventh, Lopez and Schmidt were both acquitted of a similar offense when attorney Ellis Arnold entered a ‘no-case’ submission on their behalf when the arresting officer failed to appear before the court.  While Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford upheld the submission and struck out the matter, Deputy Commissioner of Police Chester Williams informed the media several days later that the officer who was suspiciously absent for the trial would have faced an internal tribunal.  He also told reporters that Lopez and Schmidt would have been rearrested and charged for that crime.  Lopez and Gentle are set to go before the court on this latest offense next week.
