Shooter Sentenced to Ten Years After Trying to Kill Cousin

A third case before Supreme Court Justice Collin Williams was that of twenty-one-year-old Kevaughan Staine, who was sentenced to ten years behind bars for the attempted murder of his nineteen-year-old cousin, Taisha Staine.  She was walking in the Lake Independence area of Belize City on December thirtieth, 2013 when she came under gunfire. Taisha says that after Kevaughan rode by on a bike, he turned around, pointed a firearm and blasted several bullets in her direction. She was shot seven times but fortunately, survived to report the matter to police.  The incident was witnessed by her mother, Germaine Thompson, who was the prosecution’s main witness. In court, the crown was represented by Counsel Kileru Awich.

“The judge had heard mitigation of Kevaughan Staine last week. He had called his mother as a mitigation witness and a cousin of his. He also spoke for himself; he expressed his remorse and he explained to the judge that he understood what he had done was wrong and fortunately the person did not die but he realizes that somebody could have been killed for no apparent good reason. The judge today sentenced him to ten years imprisonment to commence from the date of his conviction. So the ten years actually starts running from the fourth of May 2018 which was the date that the judge had found him guilty.”
