Suspected Arson in Belmopan

Joseph Myvett

There was a fire at the home of Damian Burns in Belmopan on Sunday night and all indications are that the blaze was deliberately set. Burns reported to police that he had an altercation with a tenant and after filing the report with officers at the station, the forty-four-year-old returned to find his Toucan Avenue house on fire. The tenant was nowhere to be found. ACP Joseph Myvett says that an investigation into the suspected arson is ongoing.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“Shortly before midnight, one Damian Burns of Toucan Avenue Belmopan City reported to the police that sometime earlier that night he had an altercation with a female tenant to whom he rents one of his rooms. As a result, he went to the Belmopan Police Station to file a report. Upon his return, he found that his home was engulfed in flames; most of the items were destroyed. At this time, police is seeking that person who we believe can assist us in our investigation. The specifics of the argument were not revealed to me.”

“Did it get physical?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“No it hadn’t but obviously the tenant was along with another person, who according to Mister Burns, he did not see, but only heard the other person inside the room.”
