2 die in weekend accidents on the Western
Traffic accidents over the weekend on the Western Highway have left two people dead, one of them a twelve year old girl. According to police, the first accident occurred sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning. Police say around 4:00 a.m. on Saturday they found the body of man lying face down in the road between miles two and three, in the vicinity of the Belize Waste Control site. The man was transferred to the K.H.M.H. where he was pronounced dead on arrival. He has since been identified as twenty-eight year old Steve Osman, a labourer who lives not far from where his body was found. Investigations so far have revealed that Osman had been sitting on the road when he was knocked down by a passing car that did not stop. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the nearest police station.
Later that same day, a corporal in the British Army Training Support Unit Belize, BATSUB, knocked down a young girl. According to twenty-seven year old Corporal Christopher Ballinger, around 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, he was driving a rented Dodge Van between miles twenty-one and twenty-two when he hit a child running across the road. The child was transferred to the K.H.M.H. where she was pronounced dead on arrival. She has since been identified as twelve-year-old student of St. Mary’s School in Belize City, Janeth Escapeta. Escapeta was visiting relatives on Saturday when she was killed.
