Bert Vasquez to be Sentenced in December for Attempted Rape
Convicted criminal, thirty-five-year-old Bert Vasquez was in court today for his sentencing hearing in the courtroom of Justice Colin Williams. It took hours as the court heard a very lengthy mitigation plea from Vasquez, who represented himself. He told the court that he has not been afforded his constitutional right to a fair trial within a reasonable time. Vasquez said he has hit rock bottom and is suffering. Crown Counsel Killeru Awich read an impact statement in which Vasquez’s victim explained the ordeal she went through and the trauma that she deals with now. Earlier in the month, on November seventh, a jury found Vasquez guilty of attempted rape, but not guilty of forcible abduction. The incident dates back to January 2011 when Vasquez offered a ride to a then sixteen-year-old girl and took her to Belama Phase Four and attempted to rape her. Justice Williams adjourned the matter and will hand down a decision, believed to be sometime in December.
