Port Loyola area rep angry over garbage
Last year a section of the Port Loyola Division was flooded when water overflowed into people’s land due to dredging in the area. This time around, it’s not water that has area representative, Dolores Balderamos Garcia up in arms, but garbage. A number of persons have been illegally dumping garbage in the area and the action not only poses a health hazard for the residents, but is an eyesore.

“There is just no way that this can be tolerated. I’ve brought it to the city government’s attention, the mayor personally, and we will do all that we can to stop this. But, we need to co-operation of citizens. The garbage dump itself at mile three is located in the Port Loyola constituency, but the whole of Port Loyola cannot become a garbage dump. I am going to make noise loud and clear about it.”
There was a large accumulation of garbage on Baldwin Drive, Faber’s Road and Jane Usher Boulevard. According to Area Representative Dolores Balderamos Garcia, while it is a fact that people use refuse to fill their lands, this is not what is taking place in Port Loyola.

“I want to make it clear from the outset that this is not filling. There is no way that you can fill somebody’s property with old board, old mattress, old stoves, refrigerators, you name it. I mean this is, literally lawlessness.”
Balderamos Garcia says a lot of work has been done to improve the area and is outraged at what is taking place.

“People are just taking Jane Usher Boulevard…This portion of Jane Usher Boulevard is paved, we have been putting so much into trying to improve this area. We’re running streets behind Jane Usher Boulevard right now, we’re gonna put in a park and a basketball court later this year, and to see this…Outraged is too mild a word to describe my feelings about this.”
But it’s not only residents who are responsible for the mess. The garbage at this site off Faber’s Road was dumped by a vehicle belonging to the Ministry of Housing.

“The Mayor told me that the other day they did give out a ticket for dumping of garbage illegally. But all I can do at this point, is to really beg residents to have the discipline to bag your garbage and hold it. And secondly, the truckers from around the city, don’t bring that rubble from the old dumpsite, don’t bring boxes from shops, whether it be groceries, a demolished building.”

Residents are reminded that the illegal dumping of garbage can carry a fine of up to two thousand dollars.
