Musicians join Central American orchestra

Story Picture
Brother David Obi and Mohobob Flores, two of Belize’s master musicians, have been invited to become members of the first Central American Orchestra. The band, which is intended to become a permanent group, will be directed by Manuel Obregon, a well known composer and pianist from Costa Rica. According to Music Co-ordinator at the House of Culture, Jason Guerrero, the new group will showcase ethnic music from throughout the region.

“It’s beneficial in several senses. In one way, we talk about trying to link the world in various areas. Here in Central America, through this kind of programme, we can fuse and come up with our own Central American sound. So, that’s one way in which it benefits the musicians to be part of that; it’s a very historic undertaking. As far as I know, it’s never been done in Central America before. In other parts of the country yes, but this is the first opportunity to do that. So that’s one way, and out of that other rhythms will come. Mohobob will be using turtle shells, Brother David will be playing guitar and using the gumbay drums.”

“Really and truly, it’s an honour for us to go a represent the country again after a nice little rest. Secondly and close to first, is the fact that we’re going to create a different sound, something new in music. I always love to be a part of things that are original creations. And at the same time, my credentials show that I am a creator in my own way, so I feel very comfortable going into that environment.”

“How do you feel Mohobob Flores, being a part of this historic undertaking?”

“Well I’m excited because it’s a new experience to present Belize. So it’s creativity now, time to create something new along with the rest of Caribbean countries and the style of music that we will be playing.”

Tonight, Obi and Flores will be taking part in rehearsals, which start at the national stadium in Costa Rica. The orchestra is scheduled to perform three concerts this month with other Central American performances later this year. Obi and Flores are expected to return on February twenty-fifth.
