Where to Get Your Ham for the Christmas
It is the time of the year when families are looking forward for the traditional Christmas meal: ham, turkey and the trimmings. Even if your meal doesn’t include the bird, it will be a success if it includes ham. The following story is not a recipe; it is about where you can purchase an affordable ham. News Five’s Duane Moody tells you what he found around town.
In some households, aside from the turkey, ham will be on the menu for the Christmas lunch. Shoppers across the country have been trying to secure that juicy, succulent meat for their dinner tables. While there are many recipes to prepare your ham including the use of pineapples and honey mustard, we found out more about the demand and what meat shops and grocery stores are doing to cater to customers.
J and W Shopping Mart on Sixth Street in the Kings Park area, formerly known as K-Park, says that it has the lowest prices on a particular imported ham. Michael Theus is the general manager.
Michael Theus, General Manager, J&W Shopping Mart
“We brought in the Andy’s Smoked Shoulders and we are selling them at four-thirty-nine a pound; that our retail price. Wholesale, we are giving at four-twenty-five a pound, but I am trying to stop off of the wholesale for right now because I want to ensure that I have hams to last within the supermarket until new years. It has been exceptional as far as I am concerned when it comes to J and W. We have been having a steady stream of persons coming in and out of the store, getting our hams. We are confident that we have one of the cheapest hams in the market right now and we say it is one of the tastiest hams, likewise.”
Over at Joe’s Meat Shop on Central American Boulevard near the stoplight at its intersection with Vernon, they boast having quality meats and reasonable prices. While you can choose from an array of cuts in beef and pork, ham is what is the hottest commodity for this festive season.
Arcille Warrior, Cashier, Joe’s Meat Shop
“It’s been going good. We have our regular customers. We sell the Smithfield ham at five-fifty a pound; the Andy’s ham at five-fifty a pound.”

“So you are seeing a lot of people coming in to get their hams?”
Arcille Warrior
“Yes, lotta people. We have our order for hams every Christmas.”
At five dollars and fifty cents a pound, buying a whole ham might be too steep for your pocket. But there’s no need to worry because Arcille Warrior says that they also sell half or quarter of a ham.
“We also do discount on Christmas. We also sell it by half or quarter for customers who cannot afford to buy the whole ham. It is also five-fifty a pound. We do sales on different meats and we give discount for the Christmas month. So the pork chop is usually five-seventy-five; you can get it at five-fifty a pound. The grind steak is usually seven; you can get it at six-fifty.”
So head on out and get that the other white meat to go perfectly with a serving of rice and beans, potato salad, stuffing, cranberry sauce and turkey. Duane Moody for News Five.
