If you’re planning to have a party or enjoy some festivities with family and friends to ring in 2019, it is important that you follow general safety tips to keep your New Year’s Eve celebration safe. At this time of the year, alcohol often plays a big part in the activities and many people leave their homes to party.  Many persons will be on the highways driving through heavy traffic, which can also put their safety at risk. So, the Belize Police Department wants you to adhere to some routine safety measures to help make your New Year celebration a memorable one.  ASP Alejandro Cowo shares some dos and don’ts for this New Year’s holiday.

ASP Alejandro Cowo, O.C., C.I.B., Belize City

“We always advise the persons who will be out there enjoying themselves that they must be considerate to other persons. And if you will be driving, remember if you want to drink, don’t allow yourself to be behind the steering wheel and get someone else to drive for you. Always remember the safety procedure that you must go through. Before you leave your house, always ensure that everything is properly secured and do not leave behind any electrical appliance plugged in and ensure that your stove is properly cut off to avoid any fire or anything inside. Also, we want to appeal to the public, if you go out there to enjoy yourself and have a wonderful new year and try to avoid any confrontation with anybody over small matters because those are the things that we know always escalate out of hand during these festivities.”
