Bar Offers Free Legal Aid for Residents of the Old Capital
The Bar Association is offering free legal advice as part of an outreach effort to persons who may not otherwise be able to afford the services of the country’s top lawyers. The complimentary clinic began in November of last year and will continue through the month of January. On Monday, members of the fraternity will make themselves available to the public at Battlefield Park in Belize City where they will provide counsel on everything from land disputes to divorce and criminal matters.
Iliana Swift, Secretary, Bar Association of Belize
“The Bar Association has been conducting legal aid clinics since December 2018 and its continuing through January 2019. Essentially, we are going to each district offering free legal consultations, legal advice to the public and basically ascertaining where exactly or which area we need to focus in providing services to underserved people in Belize. It’s meant to assist people who are unable to finance these top attorneys, so essentially what we are doing is, members of the bar are going out into these districts and anyone who wants to come out and if they have a legal question and if there are concerned about something that has some legal implication then they can come and ask an attorney that’s there.”
