Bandits and Yabra fall to Costa Rica’s Carmelita

Story Picture
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and you’re on board this fresh flight on Sports Monday. It was a weekend of international football with the visit of Associacion Deportiva Carmelita from Cost Rica in full effect. Friday night they clobbered Builders Hardware Bandits 3-nil, so we take you out to M.C.C. Grounds where the semi-pro champions Kulture Yabra got its turn to defend the homeland.

This is part of the pre-game ceremony, which included the playing of the national anthems of both countries and well, we’re underway. The first serious attack of the ballgame comes from the visitors who find an open goal only to come up empty.

Some fourteen minutes in, Robert Muschamp sets table for Landi Pinelo and guess what? Belize takes a 1-zip lead and the barracks erupts in celebration. Naturally, the visitors respond with more pressure and try to even the score here, but the shooter kicks with self-protection in mind, which is a pretty good idea at this time.

In the meantime, Yabra tries to double the lead with this vicious Norman Nunez bomb, but the keeper is well positioned in the sticks. It’s Tilliman Nunez again on the move inside the danger zone, but he fails to find Robert Muschamp. Off this throw in, Carmelita attacks with the long shot, which sailed over the crossbar.

Still, the best scoring opportunity for the visitors comes right here on this nice teamwork, but the ball inches outside the sticks. You want to see a professional long range shot? Well the Costa Rican captain provides us with the perfect example, while Shane Moody highlights his goal-keeping talents. So at the half, we have a 1-zip Yabra lead.

After intermission, Yabra comes out looking for a quick goal. Unfortunately, Pinelo can’t catch up with the pill. If this was a card game, then Shane Moody plays his pass right here because he gets away with a big time error.

Keep your eyes on the pill; the heel pass, the centre, the header, the equaliser and we’ve got a new ballgame. It’s the visitors with the obvious superiority in the ballgame now and should have taken a 2-1 lead here, but the striker misplays miserably.

Talk about misplay people, the Yabra defence really butchers this clearance kick, forcing Shane Moody to come up with a spectacular save and he does. However, Moody could not come up with a save when this long distance bomb crashes in the net behind him as the Costa Ricans take the 2-1 victory.

Fact is folks, Carmelita came to town and beat our best two teams scoring five goals and giving up one. Certainly, the football people must know that the level of play exhibited by the Bandits and Yabra over the weekend shows that our semi-pro teams are simply not ready for CONCACAF football.

Meanwhile, in Regents Cup play over the weekend, Griga United shot down Acros Bombers 4-zip. Acros Real Verdes stumped on Jacintoville 5-nil. The Bandits and Corozal F.C. struggled to a scoreless stalemate, while Juventus and Lazio F.C. settled for that very same score at the People’s Stadium yesterday.

That’s our show for today, we invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
