Mexican exhibit displays structural styles

Story Picture
While Belize is known for its distinctly colonial architecture, in the rest of Central America, much different but no less beautiful, structural styles dominate the cityscapes. Today News 5’s Jacqueline Woods got a sneak peak at an exhibit that will focus on one type of architecture that’s very popular in neighbouring Mexico.

Even if you haven’t had the opportunity to travel to Mexico, no doubt these are familiar scenes. The exhibition at the Belize Mexican Cultural Institute displays some of Mexico’s grandiose architecture and gives interesting insight into one of that country’s impressive forms of art…The Mexican Baroque.

The photographs were taken by well-known Mexican photographer, Dolores Dalhaus who has specialised in capturing Baroque Art on film. The art, which dates back to the sixteenth century, was imported from Spain and adapted in Mexico. Today the style can be seen in the architecture of many of Mexico’s cathedrals, churches and convents.

“The Baroque is maybe the most well-know and most appreciated form of art of the colonial period. We have very high expressions of this Mexican baroque near Mexico City. It can be found in Tasco, which is on the way between Mexico City and Acapulco, or in Vera Cruz, in the different states of Mexico, especially those surrounding the capital.”

Belize is just one of many international countries that the exhibition has been on display. Arturo Trejo, the Mexican Ambassador to Belize, says he’s hoping the show receives equal success in the country.

“We hope to show to the Belizean public, all expressions of Mexican art. Being the baroque art, one of the highest expressions of our artistic values, this is why we wanted to bring it to Belize. But of course, being a neighbour country of Belize, we are pleased to show all expressions we can, so that the Belizean public appreciates and gets to know what we have to offer in Mexico.

The general public, especially art students, are invited to the exhibition which will run until February fifteenth. Reporting for News 5, Jacqueline Woods.

The exhibition, hosted at the Belize-Mexico Cultural Institute on Wilson Street in Belize City, officially opens tonight.
