Closing arguments for Meerabux trial set for Tues.
The trial of former justice George Meerabux continued in the Supreme Court in Belize City today. The main point of contention in the courtroom this afternoon proved to be whether or not the best interest of justice was served when the Belize Advisory Council decided to hold the tribunal hearings en camera or behind closed doors. The assertion by attorney Derek Courtenay that such a decision was within the tribunal’s discretion was strongly challenged by Justice Christopher Blackman. Blackman called the decision “repugnant to the spirit of constitution”. Closing arguments for the case are set for Tuesday morning, as the ceremonial opening of the criminal session of the Supreme Court takes place on Monday.
