Cayo woman conned in immigration scam

A San Ignacio woman has been conned out of sixty thousand dollars and has nothing to show for it. Police say forty-five year old Nora Torres, a businesswoman of a West Street address in San Ignacio reported that between September 2000 and 2001 she paid out the money to one Marchelian Stratmore Requena. According to Torres, Requena is an American from Santa Elena Town, claiming to be an agent for the United States Immigration and Naturalisation Service. She claims he promised to hand over six resident alien cards and four Social Security Cards. So far, Torres has not seen or heard from Requena, who was paid via Western Union. Police say he’s residing in the U.S. and will be questioned if and when he comes to Belize. Viewers are reminded that any information they need to know about legal immigration to the Untied States is available free from the U.S. embassy.
