Police deny conspiracy theories re: Psycho’s death

Story Picture
Two days after the bodies of Kirk “Psycho” Thompson and Edmund Velasquez were retrieved from the Old Northern River in Maskall, just how these two young men died is still a matter of contention. But despite the number of conspiracy theories in circulation and the serious aspersions being cast on the Belize Police Department, it seems for all intents and purposes, this case ended on Thursday when both men were laid to rest. Latest reports to our newsroom indicate that not only were police in the area earlier in the week, they may have been in contact with the men before they were found on Wednesday. Today News 5’s Ann-Marie Williams asked Police Press Officer G. Michael Reid to chronicle the series of events that began with the murders of a security guard, businessman and police officer and ended with the bodies of the suspects being found in the river.

G. Michael Reid, Police Press Officer

“The police have not seen this guy since the manhunt began. They were looking for them and they were elusive. A call was made for them to come in and turn themselves in, the Ombudsman, as you know made a plea, and the parents I understand, at least the mother of Kirk Thompson did come in from the United States. We were under the impression that she was here to assist the process of him coming in and facing the course of justice. So the police were not in contact with these guys at all, we were looking for them.”

Ann-Marie Williams

“So can these two strong guys drown in a river where the water is almost stagnant?”

G. Michael Reid

“There are a lot of speculations, and people will speculate, it’s not something that you can avoid. A number of things could have happen. You know it has been cold the last couple of days. If they were running, in fact we understand that they thought they were sighted they would have been running and jumped into the water or something, maybe a cramp. Something could have happen. The one in the villages there was saying it’s not an area of the river that people usually swim because it’s a dangerous area of the river. Rivers have dangerous undercurrents, one be might have been drowning and reached out and try to get help from the other one and carry the other one down. Situations happen, so it’s all speculation at this point. I don’t know if we’ll every be able to know what exactly happen, but of course, an investigation is going to be launched, that for sure, and the forensic experts are trying to determine exactly how it occurred.”
