Garbage fire destroys home on Jane Usher Boulevard

Story PictureThe fire at the City Council dump site has been extinguished but still burning garbage was the cause of the city’s latest blaze. A house at the end of Jane Usher Boulevard was gutted this morning after the trash that had accumulated nearby ignited. The Fire Department responded to a report of a garbage fire at eight-forty-five this morning only to find out, that the home of twenty-five year old Kendis Diego was also destroyed in the flames. News Five got more details from the Fire Department Station Supervisor, Kenneth Mortis.

Kenneth Mortis, Station Supervisor, Fire Department
“We had a call for a garbage fire, that was the initial call. When we arrived at the location our crew found the garbage on fire. Due to heavy smoke, we did not literally see the structure but after extinguishing this garbage we realized that a house had caught fire due to the close proximity of the garbage. We later on found out that this house was occupied by two persons who were not at home at the time and the house had no electricity. So we simply extinguished the garbage and the remaining parts of the structure. I think the house was built too close to the garbage or the garbage started piling up too close to the house. But whichever the case, that house got burnt due to the fire from the garbage.”

The structure was not insured and the loss is estimated at two thousand dollars.
