No charges brought in death of unborn child
A man accused of beating his pregnant wife unconscious is tonight still in custody waiting to be charged. According to police, thirty-eight year old Clifton Davis will be charged tomorrow with aggravated assault for the weekend incident in which Alice Corpius, his eight-month pregnant common-law wife, was viciously beaten and left for dead in Democracia village. She miscarried the baby a day later, but no charges are being contemplated for the unborn child’s death. Why? A check of the Criminal Code Chapter 101 Laws of Belize section 111 subsection 4, reveals that a person can be prosecuted for child destruction if it can be proven that the death of the baby was caused by a wilfully intended act not done in good faith. Police sources, however, tell News 5 that despite what appears to be an obvious connection, the attending physician at the K.H.M.H. has been unable to conclusively determine that the beating was the cause of the baby’s death. Corpius remains in the K.H.M.H. in a serious condition.
