Mike Espat Sr. serious after weekend crash
Toledo East Representative Mike Espat Sr. is tonight in serious condition after he sustained head and body injuries in a traffic accident on the Western Highway over the weekend. Espat has been admitted to the Belize Medical Associates in Belize City and we understand underwent surgery earlier today. According to police, Espat was travelling with his son Mike Jr. and one Paulina Cruz in his government issued 2002 Mitsubishi Montero around three p.m. on Sunday towards Belmopan. Reports are that near mile thirty-one, the driver lost control and the truck flipped over as many as four times before landing on its tires on the left hand side of the road. All three occupants of the vehicle sustained serious injuries. Cruz and Mike Espat Jr. are currently admitted to ward at the K.H.M.H. in a stable condition. Police have yet to disclose who was the driving at the time of the accident.
Because of Espat’s condition, it is uncertain whether the planned Public Utilities Commission hearings will continue as scheduled for this Thursday. Viewers can note that Espat is the chairman of the House Committee on Public Utilities and was slated to oversee the hearings. According to the clerk of the National Assembly, Jesus Ken, there have been no instructions yet to reschedule the hearings so as of now, pro-tem chairman Patty Arceo will assume Espat’s responsibilities.
