Pregnant woman loses baby after vicious attack

Police are tonight on the lookout for a teenager who witnessed a grisly crime in which a pregnant woman was beaten senseless and left for dead near La Democracia over the weekend. According to police, on Saturday night thirty year old Alice Copus, mother of three and eight months pregnant, was travelling with her common-law husband identified as Clifton Davis and his nephew Kareem Davis, both of mile five and a half on the Western Highway. Reports are that the elder Davis drove to the satellite town and parked near a construction site. Both Davises then proceeded to load cement blocks into the vehicle. Copus told the men she wanted no part in the robbery and an argument ensued between her and Clifton Davis. Davis became enraged and it is alleged he picked up a steel rod and viciously beat the pregnant woman in the head and to her body. She lost consciousness and the men left her where she lay. When she regained consciousness she managed to make her way into La Democracia where villagers rushed her to the K.H.M.H. Unfortunately for Copus, despite medical treatment, sometime on Sunday, she miscarried her unborn child. She remains in a serious condition. Clifton Davis has been arrested, but as of newstime tonight has not been charged. Under the criminal code, Section 103 of the laws of Belize, a person can be charged with the murder of an unborn child. Police have yet to question Davis’ nephew, Kareem. Anyone knowing the whereabouts of Kareem Davis is asked to contact the nearest police station.
