P.M. visits Toledo hot spot
Prime Minister Said Musa today visited the Toledo Village of San Vicente, site of recent controversy over the shooting deaths of three Guatemalans by Belizean security forces. Musa, accompanied by Chief of Staff Francis Fonseca and C.E.O. in the Ministry of Rural Development Roy Cayetano, met with villagers who have expressed concerns about their close proximity to a tension ridden border. According to a press office release, the P.M. assured residents that the Belizean and Guatemalan governments are in constant dialogue and are working together to normalise the situation. He also explained the new system of joint military patrols within the two kilometre wide adjacency zone, which straddles both sides of the frontier. These patrols were instituted at the request of the O.A.S. facilitators following their conclusion that a Belizean patrol used excessive force in shooting the three Guatemalan farmers who attacked them with machetes.
