Girls operated on for bus injuries

Fifteen year old Shamira McKoy and fourteen year old Nicole Vacarro, the two cousins who were crushed by a bus on Wednesday morning, have undergone surgery at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. McKoy, who broke her pelvis and Vacarro, who suffered multiple fractures to the same bone, both remain in stable condition. Shortly after nine on Wednesday morning, both girls were injured after the bus they had just stepped off of pinned them between the vehicle and a guardrail at the Cemetery Road roundabout. The police say no charges have been brought against bus driver Leonzo Rivera in connection with the traffic accident. On Wednesday, Police Public Relations Officer G. Michael Reid told News 5 that following their investigation the file would be sent to the Director of Public Prosecution who will decide whether or not Rivera would be charged. Today, Inspector Martin Yama, the officer in charge of the Traffic Department, told us that it’s only when there is a doubt whether an offence has been committed that the case would be forwarded to the D.P.P. Yama says the reason Rivera has not yet been charged is that the police investigation is still ongoing and Vacarro and McKoy have not yet been questioned.
