Griga and Lazio fight to draw

Story Picture
Good evening I’m James Adderley and tonight’s show closes out Sports Monday for the year 2001. Like you know it Belize, we’re always on time and we’re always here when you call and that’s not about to change. What’s also not going to change is the leader atop the B.F.L. standings as we head into the second round of play this weekend.

Griga United travelled to the People’s Stadium yesterday for a back match with O.W.’s Lazio F.C. carrying with them the opportunity to dethrone Kulture Yabra if only they could come up with the three points.

In the role of visitor, Griga United tries to grab the early lead from off this long distance floater, but fate hasn’t put on quite the right stuff.

At the other end, Lazio finally produces an offensive threat when Christopher Hendricks tries this on the run left foot shot, but Stanley Reneau takes charged. Denmark Casey then launches this spotkick, which lacks the power to impress the scoreboard.

If you say football is a game of inches, then you’re probably right for which Stanley Reneau is certainly thankful as the game remains scoreless.

As the ballgame advances, Lazio seems to grow in confidence and stature, and while Christopher Hendricks’ shot is blocked, number eleven smacks the pill at goal only to see Marvin “Rugged” Flores hand the ball out of the goal.

It’s a red card for Flores since it was the last line of defence, and it’s a penalty kick for Lazio. Pablo Tun steps up to beat Reneau with a well-placed ground ball and Lazio take the 1-zip lead.

Can Lazio make it 2-nil? Well if it wasn’t for Air Jordan, this Christopher Hendricks header would have crashed into the net. By the way, Stanley Robinson, what’s happening on this move?

Okay Griga fans, it’s your time to shine when Denmark Casey finds Bent Burgess and his high header ties the game at one apiece.

Bring out the drums Dangriga because two minutes later it’s Casey again setting table for Burgess, who knocks in his league leading ninth goal of the season to give Griga a 2-1 lead just before intermission.

Immediately into second half, Lazio looks to equalise, only to see Christopher raise the bomb over the crossbar from point-blank range.

At the other end Dennis Serrano’s left foot shot sails over the crossbar as he squanders the icing for Griga. Meanwhile, Lazio will lament this failure by number eleven to capitalise on this nice run through, but no goal, no cigar, even if it looks good.

However, a minute later Dean Banner’s right-away offering is tracked down by brother Christopher and we have a tied ballgame at two apiece.

Now file this sequence under Ripley’s Believe it or Not as Banner and Hendricks both miss important scoring opportunities to give Lazio the winning goal, forcing the hostilities to conclude in a 2-2 final score, giving Griga only one point, when they needed three to overtake the leaders.

In other back match on the schedule, Acros Bombers handed Jacintoville a 2-1 punch at Toledo’s Union Field. And yes the Acros Bombers certainly will be the team for the year 2002.

In the meantime, we’d like to thank you for supporting Sports Monday over the years. We certainly want to thank our cameramen and the entire staff. From us to you, may you have a blessed New Year. Jah over all! I’m James Adderley.
