Fire Breaks Out at Belize Aquaculture Ltd.

A raging fire broke out at the Belize Aquaculture Limited this afternoon. News Five has learned that fire erupted at around two o’clock. An eyewitness informed our newsroom that three firefighters arrived at the scene at around four-thirty-eight- more than two hours after. Our newsroom was also informed that after quickly examining the situation, the firefighters decided not to engage the inferno due to its intensity and magnitude. The fire started in the main building which houses the offices and processing plant. Fortunately, there was no one inside at the time of the fire. The main building has not been in use recently due to the outbreak of the bacterial disease which affected the shrimp industry. Belize Aquaculture Limited is located on the Placencia Road in the Stann Creek District. Residents of nearby villages are being asked to protect themselves from the smoke which is blanketing the immediate area. Fire officials say that residents of Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Villages should evacuate to a safe area because the smoke contains quantity of Ammonia and chlorine.
