Jacintoville takes a licking from Yabra

Story Picture
Good evening, I’m James Adderley and welcomed to Sports Monday. In a tale of teams streaking in opposite directions, week eight of the Regent’s Cup Tournament found Jacintoville of Toledo at the M.C.C. Grounds looking for its second season win against no less than the defending champion Kulture Yabra.

The visitors attack Willie Bo Bernard from off this long distance spotkick, but today the Yabra keeper is in control. Well, maybe not for too long, because eleven minutes in, this centre off the right wing finds Marlon Dubon whose rightaway half-volley beats Bernard for the 1-nil Toledo lead. Can you believe it?

Stung and embarrassed by a rookie BFL team that shows only one win in seven tries, Yabra responds with extreme prejudice. Newcomer Oliver Hendricks centres to Norman “Tilliman” Nunez and his second goal of the season ties the ballgame at 1 apiece four minutes later.

Another centre from off the rightwing finds Nunez, but this time the Jacintoville keeper comes up with a dramatic save. Suddenly it’s all Yabra as Tilliman heels to Hendricks, who tarried too long to beat the Jacintoville defence.

Tilliman then deals to Hendricks who finds Pinelo, who squanders and this time Nunez is upset. If you want things done, then you’ve got to do it yourself as Nunez leads by example right, but not quite as the ball inches outside the sticks.

Now watch number eight of Yabra get taken down inside the box. The referee rules penalty, so who you gonna call? It’s Vallan Simms and he makes it look easy as Yabra goes up 2-1. Make it 3-1 when Roberto Muschamp connects with this right foot splice that tangles behind the keeper.

The visitors couldn’t make the adjustment, so Nunez takes advantage for his second of the match as Yabra goes up 4-1. And it could have been 5-1 when Vallan Simms’ spotkick is somehow pushed over by the flying keeper, but at the half its still a 4-1 Yabra lead.

It’s a good day for Nunez indeed when he completes the hat trick with this perfectly placed right foot floater to give Yabra the 5-1 lead quickly into second half.

Just about a minute later Pinelo misses this slice, but fortune finds Oliver Hendricks and the player who replaced Manu McCauley gets his first for his new team as Yabra leads 6-1.

The final goal in the blowout comes when Landi Pinelo beats his man with an aerial flip as Yabra records the 7-1 win to jump atop the league standings with eighteen points. Yabra remains undefeated the only one in the league.

In other Regents Cup play, Juventus Stars handed Griga its second loss in a 2-1 crunch. Builder’s Bandits stopped Acros Bombers 2-1 in an exciting affair Saturday night. Corozal Football Club won its second; beating Lazio 1-zip and the new and improved San Pedro scorched Acros Real Verdes 1-nil.

Turning to the cycling scene, let’s head to San Cas Plaza for the big finish to the Miller Cycle Classic which ran from Orange Walk to Belize City.

Hugging the curve is Barney Brown who out-sprints his team-mate Ariel Rosado to take the big prize, while Ernest Meighan cruises in for third place to complete the Santino top three sweep. Jeffrey Zelaya, who jerked the set around en-route, and probably if he had help he could have finished better, but he had to settle for fourth, while Francisco “The Animal” Flores rounds out the top five.

Barney Brown, Winner

“This one really put me on the edge right now, because I’m getting kind of old, so I gotta try to represent. I want to say thanks to all my team-mates, my sponsor, my family and friends. The plan was to work for me and Jawmeighan and it worked pretty good because then I made a break and Jawmeighan just set in, so it works pretty good.”

Ariel Rosado, Second Place

“Mr. Santino, of course the race is sponsored by him and from the moment the race was formed, he told us he wants one through three. So we had to work hard, we worked as a team and it’s the first time we really came together in a long time because we weren’t gelling so well the past few months. We hope it’s the beginning of a new start for us for this new year.”

The next item on the cycling calendar is the tenth Krem Cycle Classic set for New Years Day, you won’t want to miss it. Last year it was Miguel Perez out-sprinting Shane Vasquez to take top prize. Who’s it gonna be this year? Well, there’s a lot of players out there today, so see you on New Year’s day for that one.
