Peruvian Luis Marroquin Denied Bail

Peruvian national, Luis Miguel Marroquin, one of three visitors accused of preparation for a crime of theft at a Dangriga ATM, was denied bail in the Supreme Court of Justice Herbert Lord today. Crown Counsel, Riis Raymond Cattouse objected on many grounds including the prevalence of the crime and that the accused is a flight risk.   Marroquin’s attorney, Dickie Bradley, submitted that another of the accused men has indicated that he will plead guilty so his client did not have to languish in jail. While the Justice was minded to grant bail since the investigation has not yet concluded, he made an order that if Marroquin’s Preliminary Inquiry is not held by March thirtieth, then the Supreme Court will grant bail. Marroquin was remanded at the Belize Central Prison until his next court date set for March twenty-seventh, 2019 in Dangriga Magistrate’s Court. The trio was first arraigned before Senior Magistrate of Dangriga, Patricia Arana on January twenty-first, 2019. The other two persons charged are Chilean, Juan Alfonso Espinosa SaaVerdra and Edgar Jhovany Vargas Vaca, a Colombian national. The trio was found with skimmers and blank credit cards and police say that they were being monitored from November of 2018.
