Yabra and Dangriga draw in football

Story Picture
Good evening, I’m James Adderley, and you’re in tuned with Sports Monday. Week six of the Regents Cup Tournament brought two undefeated teams to the M.C.C. Grounds yesterday. Kulture Yabra with four wins and a draw played host to league leading Griga United with a perfect 5 and 0 record.

It promises to be a monster match-up and it certainly lived up to the expectation of the huge crowd. But first of all, feel the pain of contact when Guy takes down Estevan Perez with brute force for which he gets a yellow card.

Griga seems to take the lead when Bent Burgess launches this header, but closer scrutiny reveals that he did hand the ball, for which referee Jones issues another yellow card to the team from the south. Away from the play, Perez gets taken down again by Guy and this time Guy has to leave his team with a red card.

On this press, Landi Pinelo tries to reach David McCauley, but Stanley Reneau intervenes successfully.

Referee Jones creates quite a stir when he makes this call against Dangriga, which forces him to give Nelson Moss a yellow card for his rather vociferous protestations.

It’s more rough stuff when Denmark Casey gets taken down by Hilberto Muschamp for which Muschamp gets booked. At the half, we’ve got a scoreless ballgame.

In second half, Griga United look for offence off this spotkick and it creates some excitement, but Shane Moody eventually controls the situation. Yes, Manu McCauley, we see your bad intentions, but the execution is somewhat flawed.

Meanwhile, Moody gets tested down by this trick shot in heavy traffic, but he passes with flying colours. Of course, its getting late and Yabra has the opportunity to open the scoreboard here, but the shot sails high.

For sure, it’s Daniel Serrano who impresses the scoreboard with this run for a one on one situation and he gets the job done after two tries as Griga takes a 1-zip lead.

Here Landi Pinelo sets table for Norman Nunez, whose subsequent shot rockets over the crossbar.

It’s Serrano again, this time with the opportunity to double the lead, but comes up empty on this occasion. Downfield, Kulture Yabra finally get something going when Pinelo lifts to Ervin “Bird” Flores and his rightaway push ties the ballgame at one apiece.

Yabra looks to steal the victory in moneytime, when Nunez fires this grasshead burner that just inches outside the sticks.

Deon Flowers gets his shot to give Yabra the W, but he can’t find the target. Landi Pinelo then gets his turn to take the city team to victory, but he fails from point-blank range, which allows Griga United to hold on to the 1-1 regulation tie. Both ballclubs remain undefeated going into week seven.

In other Regents Cup action over the weekend, Acros Verdes and Builders Bandits battle to a scoreless tie. Lazio outlasted Jacintoville 3-2 to record its first win yesterday. Acros Bombers got its first win in a 5-1 drilling of Corozal Football Club, and Juventus blanked San Pedro 3-zip to remain undefeated.

Turning to the Central American Games, Belize finished with three gold, five silver, and ten bronze. Rushiel Bevans took gold at the cruiser weight class of bodybuilding, his second in a row, Belize basketball beat Costa Rica in the finals for the gold, and Alton Berry was the best in high jump.

Bodybuilding got four silver and racquetball the other. Female softball with a 3-5 record came home with bronze, while the other bronze medals come from track and field, bodybuilding and karate.

In the meantime, some sporting communities will have to examine their development programmes after major disappointments at Guatemala. Male football did not get a win, even against Nicaragua the number seventh team in Central American ratings, while female football was simply overwhelmed.

Male softball did not win a single match, taking some really disturbing margin of wins. Air pistol did not qualify, while Belizean boxing was probably the biggest bust of the games. Of six fighters, five had the wrong papers, and the one that did fight, was knocked out. The Belizean contingent of two hundred and nineteen finished last in the medal count with its total of eighteen medals.

There you have it folks, life is real and then you have to face the music. I hope we certainly can produce a better performance next time. That’s it for now, we invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley!
