Weekend robberies plague nation
Night or day, morning or afternoon, it seems that no time is off-limits for hold-ups. No less than six robberies over the weekend have netted the bad guys close to seven thousand dollars in cash and jewelry. We’ll start with the biggest rake. According to police reports, around 11:00 a.m. on Friday, Augustine Benjamin, driver for Gallardo’s Industries in Belmopan, was driving from Franks Eddy Village to the Western Highway, when halfway there, four masked men jumped out of the bushes bearing a shotgun and what appeared to be a point thirty-eight revolver. Benjamin and his sideman were then robbed of thirty-five hundred dollars of company cash and eighty-five dollars and personal items from their own pockets.
The next heist happened in Orange Walk on Sunday. According to thirty-five year old George Leslie of Ladyville, while he was walking on the Otro Benque Road in Orange Walk Town he was approached by two Hispanic men who proceeded to rough him up and rob him of several pieces of jewelry and his shoes. Leslie has estimated his property to be worth just under seventeen hundred dollars.
Meanwhile, same town, different street, a Chinese couple were robbed at gunpoint around 9:00 p.m. on Saturday. According to Orange Walk police, twenty-eight year old Xue Hua Chen of Palmar Road, three men armed with a gun and a couple knives, entered her store and while one of the men put the gun to her neck, the other held her husband at bay with a knife. The thieves then helped themselves to just under five hundred dollars in cash and two hundred dollars worth of calling cards.
And now we go to the Western Highway where a robber also used a knife to rob a woman of four hundred dollars worth of jewelry. Thirty-eight year old Anna Card told police that she was walking home just before midnight on Friday via the Western Avenue junction when a man of fair complexion held her up at knife point and took away her jewelry. Police are looking for a man identified only as “Regis” in connection with this incident.
In the north, twenty-two year old Alexander Coc told Corozal police that while he was walking on seventh Avenue, three men approached him armed with machetes. Coc says the men demanded money and when he refused, they beat him up, cutting him several times on his right hand. The men then stole Coc’s wallet containing three hundred and fifty dollars in cash and some personal items.
Another man who resisted also paid the price in a robbery that took place at the Rockville Quarry on Friday. According to police reports, forty-five year old Joe Fuzy was in his office at the quarry when four masked men entered the building brandishing pistols. They men wanted cash and when Fuzy said no, they hit him over the head and stole two hundred dollars. We regret to report that in all these cases, no charges have been filed against anyone.
