Will There Be Rotting Potatoes in the Fields Once Again
But the question remains…. will farmers be left once again with rotting potatoes in the fields due to the glut on the market? Agriculture Minister Godwin Hulse says that it is an issue that they are grappling with because the market in Belize is small.
Godwin Hulse, Minister of Agriculture
“That is an issue that we are having and what will you do about that? Consumption has to match what is being produced. And I need to add also that one of the things we are also looking and driving is exports of our products. Just last month, Jose took a delegation of farmers into El Salvador with the very idea to try to get them to understand how we can now begin to have quality, traceability for our products so that we can also enter some of those markets. Belize is a small market. I’ve always said we don’t have a market here for things we produce. You produce five acres of tomatoes; you have too much tomato. So these are things we are trying to balance and manage when I say we are doing a census where we are trying to find out so we don’t have this issue in the future.”
