One P.C. fired, another suspended for negligence
The Police Department has suspended one constable and fired another after they were found negligent in carrying out their duties as investigators in the murder of David Reyes. On November Fourth, Reyes’ decapitated body was found in the Haulover Creek. PCs Kareem Fuller and Kevin “Cowboy” Alvarez were assigned to the case, but after three suspects were taken into custody, the investigation stalled. According to authorities, it was discovered that the officers were friends of the suspects and the detainees were not properly interrogated. Although media reports claim that Fuller and Alvarez coached the men during their interrogation, police press officer, G. Michael Reid told News 5 that the officers were interdicted because the relationship they had with the suspects would have prejudiced the investigation. While Fuller has been suspended on half pay pending the outcome of an internal investigation, Alvarez was discharged from the force. Reid says there were just too many complaints from the public about Alvarez’s conduct and in the interest of the department’s integrity, they had no choice but to dismiss him. Alvarez has since sought the assistance of Ombudsman Paul Rodriguez. Meanwhile, The police do not believe that the incident has affected their ability to solve the case and they would like to deny reports that Reyes was under police protection at the time of his murder.
