2020 Will See Trade License Reform

In other news…A reform in the trade license fee is expected to be rolled out across the country in 2020. The legislation has been completed and according to Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner, it has the full support of all municipalities. Mayor Wagner says that businesses of all types will benefit from the reform.

“The key thing here has always been the unpredictability of the assessment and this new type f regime that is being rolled out really addresses that issue. It divides the sectors of the city into clear areas and you have clear cut, defined value for each different area where the assessment is more equitable and more predictable for the business owner. It will be based on where you put your business. Obviously a business that operates in an area of Penn Road, doing business in that area and having the same assessment fee is not equitable for a business operating in the higher end area and that is where this new regime speaks to.”
