N.T.U.C.B. Members to Exercise Conscious Vote for April 10th Referendum

So while the churches are in the yes corner, the National Trade Union Congress of Belize says its membership is free to exercise a conscious vote.  The N.T.U.C.B. has been holding discussions with its wider membership involving the other unions. Today, President Marvin Mora told News Five about why they took that position. With the referendum less than two months away, Mora says that they have been holding sessions and getting information from experts on both sides of the debate on whether the route of the International Court of Justice is best.

“Our membership has to be guided by a couple of things. I think one of them would have to be the voice of experts. We will definitely point towards sources of information from the different organizations that are involved in this: the International Court of Justice; the Organization of American States. Some information coming in from the various parties—whether supporting it or not is also credible, solid. But for us, the number one issue that we want to see present in any information coming to our membership would be of verifiable and credible facts. We are sticking by that guideline and we are pushing for that guideline. It doesn’t matter how you twist and turn it, it is a matter of a vote of conscience, but one that would have to be cemented with enough information from both sides of the argument. And we plea to the public to do that. Arm yourself with the information. There are many sources of information. I mean, we’ve seen presentations done by Dickie Bradley that are solid; information from the no camp. Some done by Patrick Rogers. We’ve seen some information coming from presentations done in open forums by these people including Assad Shoman who is an eminent expert in the subject. So we advice the general public, we advice our members to look for both sides of the argument and use that guide of information that is not just sensational or emotional, but more factual.”
