Voter ID Cards ready!
The Elections and Boundaries Department has begun issuing Voter ID cards for persons who registered in April 2018. According to Josephine Tamai,ID cards will also be distributed by Elections and Boundaries personnel at the polling stations on Referendum Day.
Josephine Tamai, Chief Elections Officer
“The distribution started today for those that were approved for the month of July We are phasing it in and we also made an announcement whereby we said that we are going to get dates to go into villages to distribute those ID cards. We also had proposed in terms of having ID cards at the polling stations on Referendum Day for persons who have not gotten an opportunity to pick up their ID cards. I guess you all would have heard in there that some persons where saying but why issue ID cards on referendum day? They don’t believe that should happen and like it said that is a matter I will take back to the elections and boundaries commission for a decision to be taken. Personally I believe that we should not have ID cards similar to what we had before because we have thousands and thousands of cards that people don’t bother to pick up. Going out to those polling stations it’s not mandatory that people pick-up but it is just there to facilitate those persons. It’s up to them because you can vote, with or without your ID card.”
