U.B. hosts culture day
In
keeping with the spirit of the upcoming November nineteenth celebrations,
University of Belize students usually mount a cultural display of Garifuna
food, dance and music. This year, however, the students added the Creole,
Maya, Asian and East Indian cultures to the event.
Delanei Thurton, U.B. Student
“We have two types of bread, the Paratha and the Pinar Kutha. The Pinar
kutha looks like tortilla, but it is filled with vegetables, and the Piratha
is simply something like the tortilla that we’re accustomed to. We also
have the chicken tika masala and the lamb masala. The lamb is cooked with
red and green chilli peppers wild spice. And the chicken is cooked with
curry and cream.
(points to forehead) This is called a bindi and this is called (points
to head) a chindi and this is called a gagra. We also have a sari, but
that is just a piece of cloth that is six feet long and they just wrap
it around them.”
U.B.’s Cultural Day is one of the many activities promoted by the
university’s Student Government Association.
