B.N.T.U. to Host I.C.J. Forum

Elena Smith

The Belize National Teachers’ Union is holding an I.C.J. forum on Friday. The forum will take place at the auditorium of the University of Belize. According to National President, Senator Elena Smith, teachers will hear speakers from both sides. It is expected presentations will be enlightening and leave the teachers with enough facts to make an informed decision.

Senator Elena Smith, National President, B.N.T.U.

“We are having a forum on March eight in Belmopan where we will be bringing teachers from across the country to that. For us we know that some of our other colleagues have been sessions as well with their members. For us we don’t want to have a session where we have one side. That has always been out position and so we will be having the yes and the no presenting to us. We will have Mr. Belisle presenting his historical facts to our teachers so that all our teachers, members can get all the perspective so that they can make the right decision. At the end of the day Hipolito, if you listen to people in the south you will hear different concerns than you would hear from those living in Belize City for example. If you listen to persons who live in the west you will hear different concerns from those in Belmopan and other areas because of their experiences. So it is going to be difficult for us to put forth a decision on the matter because our members have different views and we have some yes and we have some no. Some teachers do not want to express a yes or a no at this point in time. They still want some time for them to make a decision. It will be unfair of us to say right now that B.N.T.U. position is this when we have not really gotten the mandate from our members.”
