Why Were Ledgers with Voters’ Information on Ground in Front of Vital Stats?
Photographs were made available to News Five today showing six ledgers strewn on the ground in front of the office of Vital Statistics in Belize City. The ledgers contain information of voters and the photos were taken this morning. Now, the binders were traced to Clarence Williams of Offspring Booking Services of the Lake Independence area. Surprisingly, Williams himself visited us this morning, believe it or not, with his explanation as to why delicate voter records in his care were photographed on a public street unattended. He says he went to deliver the books to the office of Vital Stats after binding them. He went on to explain that when delivering the books back to the Vital Stats office, the traffic was heavy and he needed to put the binders on the street so that he could open the office’s door. Following the posting of the photos on our Facebook page today, officials at Vital Stats asked him to explain. Now, being considerate of a person trying to open a door with full hands is one thing. But, in the current environment where the Vital Stats Office is under such scrutiny, we can also understand why onlookers were eager to share the photos with this station and why viewers were outraged at the thought of such delicate and sensitive information laying on the ground on a Belize City street side.
