Alleged Criminal and Former Mexican Politician Hiding in Belize
The former municipal president of Othón P. Blanco in Yucatan, Eduardo Elías Espinosa, is a fugitive and Mexican authorities believe he is in Belize. Online Mexican newspapers report that Espinosa did not only seek refuge in Belize, but residence. An arrest warrant was issued for Espinosa in November 2017 on twenty-two criminal charges for the embezzlement of more than one million pesos. He is also accused of illicit enrichment during his tenure in office; at the time, he formed part of two political parties: National Action Party and National Regeneration Movement. A few weeks ago, Espinosa was spotted at a shopping center in Mérida, but it is believed that he travels to and from Belize. Mexican authorities say that Espinosa has been on the run for almost three years.
