Diehard footballers do battle in the rain

Story Picture
Good evening I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday. Belizeans might have been tuned into the Mr. Cycling Pageant at the City Centre Saturday night, but by Sunday the focus had shifted to Week II of the Regent’s Cup Tournament. We caught up with the action at M.C.C. Grounds, as Acros Bombers played host to Griga United.

And the first thing we must let you know, is that this is a rainy evening and the M.C.C. is now a very heavy pitch. The early attacks in the ballgame belong to the young legs of Acros Bombers, but their inexperience also becomes evident.

If you don’t believe it, well watch this clean breakaway, one doesn’t know he’s offside and the other gives away the pill to the keeper. Of course, this battle at midfield shows the true nature of the competition at the M.C.C. Grounds today and for this, you do need legs.

Nevertheless, Griga’s real attempt at offence comes late in the first half of this corner kick by Stanley Rice Robinson, which is eventually cleared. At the other end, one wonders if lady luck would smile on this left foot centre, but she doesn’t.

And here’s what may just be the best shot offered by the Bombers in this ballgame, but it gets rejected by the keeper. Meanwhile, the pass to Bent Burgess of Griga is good, but the terrain becomes the biggest obstruction. Just before the half expires, Acros Bombers get yet another scoring opportunity and again fail to convert.

Barely into the second half, this corner kick is tracked down by Azzizi Suazo, as Griga jumps to a 1-zip lead. And yes, nuff respect to the fourth official of the ballgame, Ms. Jackie Meighan, a trailblazer in female football.

The Griga attacks now keep increasing, but this trip they do come away empty handed. Goal number two comes when Dennis Serrano takes advantage of poor defence to make this run that culminates with this wicked left foot that crashes into the net.

The young Acros team has conceded this ballgame when Bent Burgess bends this ball around the wall for a very beautiful goal to give Griga a 3-zip lead and that’s the way it ended.

In other Regent matches over the weekend, Kulture Yabra made it 2 wins in a row with a 3-zip bashing of San Pedro F.C. out at the island. Builders Bandits kept pace after beating Corozal F.C. 3-zip at the Ricalde. Acros Verdes also made it two straight wins with a 2-nil drubbing of Jacintoville at Toledo, while Juventus Stars won the battle of Sugar City edging Lazio 2-1.
