PUP Leader Slams Vital Stats
Also speaking on the issue was Opposition Leader, John Briceño, who on Friday, during the Sitting of the House of Representatives, criticized severely the Vital Statistics Unit. Briceño questioned the challenges that Belizeans are facing when dealing with the Unit.
John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition
“We have to questioned how comes it is more PUPs can’t get birth certificates. How is it that the UDPs can get birth certificates for their people? Obviously it makes you questioned this whole thing. Listen, we have about one thousand five hundred people that were disallowed by Elections and Boundaries because they said they can’t find their records. There are another two thousand people that were still on the pending list. You realize that after the referendum, any of these citizens can probably go to court to challenge the results of the referendum because they can say that they as a citizen have been disenfranchised. This is what we have been telling the government, we are not ready. We need to get all of these issues corrected before we have the referendum. It is not about having the referendum, it is about getting it right and that is not happening right now.”
