Belize Celebrates World Water Day

Kerry Belisle

Belize has joined the international community in celebrating World Water Day. The day is set aside every year as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. The World Water Day Committee held official ceremonies in Cayo last Friday where the Chief Executive Officer for the Ministry of Natural Resources, Kerry Belisle, was the guest speaker.

“This year the committee asked us to focus on tackling the water crisis by addressing the reasons why so many people are being left behind and is underpinned in the campaign ‘whoever you are, wherever you are water is your human right. This campaign message is critical in achieving the theme as access to water underpins public health and is therefore critical to sustainable development in a stable and prosperous world. We cannot move forward as a global society while so many people are living without access to safe water.”

World Water Day was first celebrated in 1993.
