Woes in Transportation over a License Issued to a Guatemalan Company
Transport woes are brewing once again. Today, police were on alert monitoring the area of the bus terminal on East Collet Canal and reportedly at the western border point. This is because there was a report that the authorities would not have allowed passengers to disembark at the terminal. Word is that a local bus line is at odds with the Transport Department who has reportedly issued a licence to two Guatemalan registered companies, Linea Dorado and Fuente del Norte, to transport passengers to and from Guatemala and Belize City. News Five contacted the manager of the local bus line, who replied that he was in meetings with the Transport Department. Now, Belizean bus operators have consistently complained that they are not allowed to freely transport passengers across the borders and therefore foreign bus operators should also not be allowed to also freely operate in Belize. News Five spoke with Minister of Transport Edmond Castro who confirmed that permits similar to those issued to ADO were granted to the Guatemalan companies to bus persons seeking medical attention or attending college in Guatemala. The problem, he says, is the myriad of mini buses that are entering the country in place of the Greyhound-style buses that were agreed upon.
