Vehicle Overturns Following High-Speed Police Chase; 2 Men Arrested

A vehicle overturned on Monday night following a high-speed chase with police. The incident occurred at the corner of Mopan and Mahogany Streets in Belize City. Two persons were detained at the scene while a third suspect is said to have escaped. It was captured on amateur video and one person is seen bleeding. Neighbours heard one of the men telling the officers that he hitched a ride. Police have not issued an official report on the matter, but security cameras captured the incident. A high-speed police chase in Belize City came to an abrupt end on Mahogany Street. At around nine-fifteen pm on Monday night, security cameras captured the get-away vehicle coming fast from Mopan Street and into Mahogany Street. As the driver takes a sudden turn, he crashes into a parked car, overturning in the process.

The police mobile is close behind. Two police officers, armed with their service-issued firearm, spring into action. One of the officers cautiously approaches the crashed vehicle to ensure that he is out of danger before his fellow police officer set chase after an unidentified person.

The officer quickly inspects the scene. A young man, bleeding from the face, is escorted out of the vehicle. A second video shows the police searching the pockets of one of the suspects. A second suspect is seen in the video. They are handcuffed and ordered to sit on the ground. The police call for back up and ambulance.

One the detainee is heard telling the officers that he hitched a ride. The third person escaped.  Police have yet to issue a report on the incident. Hipolito Novelo, News Five.
