“We are subjects to the rule of law” – PM on Pending Supreme Court Decision

On Monday, Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin will preside over a constitutional challenge brought by the People’s United Party.  The legality of the Special Agreement between Belize and Guatemala, signed in 2008, is being called to question and whether Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington had the authority to sign without House approval.  There’s a possibility that the Supreme Court can rule in favour of the claimants, effectively halting the April tenth I.C.J. referendum.  This morning, PM Barrow was asked to respond to the likelihood of such a decision and government’s subsequent plan of action.

“I wouldn’t have any choice, sir.  We are subject to the rule of law.  So whatever decision the court makes would have to be respected.”

“If you’d like my view.  In my view there would be a referendum on April tenth, 2019, but that’s just my opinionated view.  We are working very hard, Rowland, towards making sure that all the relevant arguments are put to the courts and I think I could say on behalf of my clients and myself that we firmly believe that justice will be done in this claim and that a claim that was brought at this very, very late stage at the eleventh hour is really a matter that is more a political question and not a matter of the validity of the referendum to be held on April tenth, 2019.”
