Shell donation creates Braille textbooks

Story Picture
Visually impaired students from primary, secondary and tertiary level institutions in Belize stand to benefit from educational materials being converted into Braille. A five thousand dollar donation courtesy of Shell Belize was this morning handed over to Sister Elsa Oliva, President of the Belize Council for the Visually Impaired, to subsidise the programme. Shell Belize’s representative, Joe Habet, says the money will meet an important community need.

“They will use the money to convert textbooks, regular primary school textbooks into Braille on the computer that is already being used at the B.C.V.I. They just scan the books into the computer and it prints off the book into Braille form that students can use at regular primary schools to help them with their education.

our social investment committee from Shell, has a mandate to contribute to things and organisations that helps to develop the society and the needs of society. This is in the category of our mandate to provide service for and we saw it as being a good service or help to this the cause that was presented by us.”

The changing of printed books into Braille for use in mainstream classrooms is one of many programmes undertaken by B.C.V.I.
